How much does a hot tub weigh full?

How much does a hot tub weigh full? A hard tub with all seats taken weighs about 3,000 lb up to 6,500 lb, or 1,360 kg to 2,950 kg. For an inflatable, the full weight runs 2,300 lb to 3,900 lb, or 1,040 kg up to 1,770 kg. Most of that weight is water, which is 8.34 lb per gallon.

We calculate water at 8.34 lb per gallon, using the figure from the USGS. We count each adult as 185.4 lb (84 kg). That number averages what the CDC's data shows: 199.0 lb for US men and 171.8 lb for women.

Since Lay-Z-Spa reports a boxed weight rather than net, the dry figures include packing. Bullfrog includes the cover in its dry weight figure.

Divide the full weight by the floor area beneath the tub to get load per square foot. Round tubs rely on their outer width for this calculation. MSpa gives the Verto only a 68 in width and no shape, so its area is taken as a round tub of that width, which is why its load per square foot runs higher.

Hot tub weight per square foot

The tub base spreads the weight across a slab or deck. Each square foot under a hard tub from the chart carries 71 to 106 lb (that's 345 to 516 kg per square meter).

An inflatable presses between 83 and 141 lb (406 and 688 kg/m²) because its base is small. The Lay-Z-Spa Helsinki places 297 gallons onto a circle 71 in (180 cm) wide. This results in the highest pressure shown on the chart.

Deck load calculator: can my deck support a hot tub?

Often you need extra framing to make it work. Joists, beams and posts get sized for a live load of 40 psf in the DCA 6 deck guide from the American Wood Council. This equals 40 pounds per square foot plus another 10 psf for the deck structure.

Compared with that 40 psf, each tub in the chart presses down roughly 1.8 to 3.5 times as much. Some tubs even clear the 100 psf that ASCE 7, the standard engineers design to, calls for.

The weight calculator on this page doubles as a basic deck load calculator. Choose your tub, how many people, and "On a wooden deck" to view the full weight and pounds per square foot (psf) on the deck. Check these numbers against what your deck was built to support.

Bullfrog Spas notes that a wooden deck can work if you plan carefully, space joists properly, and add extra supports. Bullfrog says a structural engineer should confirm what an existing deck can carry. Bestway advises inflatable owners to skip decks or balconies that cannot support a filled tub.

Do not fill any hot tub on a balcony or deck until your permit office or a structural engineer checks the framing.

Wooden deck compared to a concrete slab

Staying flat under the full weight makes a concrete slab the simple choice. The following section lists the pad thickness and size manufacturers require.

You can also use crushed stone, pea gravel, or concrete pavers on soil that is level and compacted. No shims are allowed by Bullfrog, which limits slope to 0.5 in (1.27 cm) over 8 ft (2.44 m). Grass is not recommended by the company.

Concrete pad thickness and size for a hot tub

Make the pad match or exceed the tub outside size so the whole base rests on it. American Whirlpool says the cabinet bottom and entire edge must have even support.

ManufacturerPad sizeThickness
Jacuzzi logoJacuzziEnsure the entire base is level within 1/8 in (3 mm).Pour and reinforce to a depth of at least 4 in (10 cm).
Bullfrog logoBullfrog SpasSlope must not exceed 0.5 in (1.27 cm) over 8 ft (2.44 m) across the whole base.Plan for at least 4 in (10 cm) using rebar or mesh; go with 6 in (15 cm) or more if you have swim spas or heavier tubs.
American WhirlpoolA pad of 8 x 8 ft, the same as 2.5 x 2.5 m, covers its hot tubs; add 12 in (30 cm) of width and length around a swim spa on each side.4 in (10 cm)

Rebar refers to steel rods placed inside the concrete. Bullfrog requires tying it to a bond wire, which grounds the tub. Plan the circuit and the pad together, then review the hot tub electrical requirements before pouring concrete.

How much does a hot tub weigh empty?

Drained, the inflatables in the chart weigh roughly 62 to 110 lb, or 28 to 50 kg. Hard tubs run between 500 and 1,100 lb (227 and 499 kg), starting at the Hot Spring Jetsetter and ending at the Master Spas TS 8.25.

The weight of a tub comes mostly from water. In a Jacuzzi J-335, 350 gallons of water adds up to 2,919 lb (1,324 kg). That's close to four times the tub itself, at 764 lb (347 kg).

Common questions

What is the full weight of a 6 person hot tub?

Add water and six adults, and a 6 seat hard tub from the chart weighs about 4,600 to 5,350 lb, or 2,100 to 2,430 kg. Inflatable models with 6 seats weigh between about 2,900 and 3,650 lb (1,320 and 1,650 kg).

What is the weight of 1 gallon of water?

The US Geological Survey uses the figure of about 8.34 lb (3.8 kg). One litre of water has a weight of 1 kg (2.2 lb).

Is it okay to put an inflatable hot tub on a deck?

This works only if the deck was built to support it. The 40 psf limit of a standard deck is far below the 83 to 141 lb per square foot from a full inflatable. Bestway warns against using decks or balconies that cannot support a filled tub.

For a hot tub, how thick should the concrete pad be?

Bullfrog Spas states you need at least 4 inches (10 cm) with rebar or mesh reinforcement. Swim spas and heavier tubs might require 6 inches (15 cm) or more.
